What is a drug substance?
A drug substance is an ingredient which enhances the effectiveness of a drug. It is also called an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Drugs are composed of several APIs. The ingredients are described on the packaging of drugs available over-the-counter. Those listed here are APIs.

医薬品は、病気の診断、治療、予防のための物であり、的確な有効性と高い安全性が求められるため、医薬品医療機器法で厳しく規制が課せられています。
原薬とは？
その医薬品に含まれている有効成分が原薬です。原薬にも高い品質と有効性、安全性が要求されています。

医薬品
医薬品は医薬品医療機器法第2条に、このように定義されています。
(1)日本薬局方に収められている物
(2)人又は動物の疾病の診断、治療又は予防に使用されることが目的とされている物であって、機械器具等（機械器具、歯科材料、医療用品、衛生用品並びにプログラム（電子計算機に対する指令であって、 一の結果を得ることができるように組み合わされたものをいう。以下同じ。）及びこれを記録した記録媒体をいう。以下同じ。）でないもの(医薬部外品及び再生医療等製品を除く。)
(3)人又は動物の身体の構造又は機能に影響を及ぼすことが目的とされている物であって、機械器具等でないもの(医薬部外品、化粧品及び再生医療等製品を除く。)
APIs are specified as “pharmaceuticals for manufacturing only” by the Enforcement Regulations of the Law on Securing Quality, Efficacy and Safety of Products including Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices, which states “pharmaceuticals (that are) sold or provided to pharmaceutical marketing authorization holders or manufacturers exclusively for the purpose of manufacturing other pharmaceuticals”.
